#1092 Mortal Kombat Deception (PS2) Hidden Characters (5/11): Li Mei playthrough.
A playthrough of the hidden character Li Mei in the PS2 version of Midway’s/Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat Deception.
This is something I’m going to re-iterate many more times, but it’s rather clear that Deception was effectively built on top of Deadly Alliance. Having Li Mei as a hidden character is a good example of that. She was a wholly irrelevant character in the previous game (from a gameplay perspective, anyhow), and she most certainly still is now.
In general, Li Mei seems extremely tacked on to me. Her design is really generic, her moves are extremely generic, and in general she comes across almost like a self-insert fan-fic character from the mid-2000s. Her special moves include a projectile, two flip-kick attacks, and a decent punch-flurry attack which tends to knock her opponents to the edge of the ring. She’s actually not too bad gameplay-wise. She has one of the easiest weapon combos in the entire game (Triangle, b + X) which deals about 23% damage. The only problem is, holy fuck it is difficult to actually use in this game. Maybe it’s just me, or the emulation, or something, but it feels like every attack in this game is delayed upon button press. It leads to an incredibly awkward, pseudo-laggy experience where sometimes things will work, and sometimes they simply won’t. It was common in Deadly Alliance too, but not nearly as bad as here, and it seems incredibly common in the fights against Onaga, most probably because that’s when inputs count the most. Might just be in my head, but I call them like I see them.
Li Mei is boring incarnate, and one of the better examples of just how creatively bankrupt Boon and his team were in regards to character designs around this time. It’s amazing just how consistently underwhelming or simply outright bad the new characters are in this sub-series, particularly as many classic characters (Ermac, Noob, Smoke, etc) were improved so dramatically. It’s a real mixed bag, as I’ve said before. I find her probably the most forgettable character of this sub-series, barring Kira perhaps, and I haven’t missed her absence in the reboot.
Lastly, that ending, what the fuck.
Speaking of, next time it’s yet another classic character who was dramatically improved in this sub-series.
