A playthrough of the hidden character Havik in the PS2 version of Midway’s/Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat Deception.

Havik is a brand-new character to the game, and you’ll soon learn why this is his only canonical appearance after playing as him. He’s basically a replacement character for both Shang Tsung, and Quan Chi. His first fighting style, Snake, was used by Shang Tsung in Deadly Alliance where as his second, Tang Soo Doo, was used by Quan Chi. His attacks are extremely Quan Chi-esque, seeing him use a cringe-inducing torso spin attack, a hilarious floor-dive attack and another grimace-inducing attack where he bends his legs backwards and shouts out a projectile. Then, he also has two unique moves where he snaps his neck, and bends his spine forwards. I always thought of Quan Chi was basically an evil version of Uncle Fester from The Addams Family, and it’s weird to realise just how right that assumption was as time’s gone on.

Due to him having some of the fastest styles in the game, Havik actually fucking rocks. It’s a strange thing to say, considering he’s an otherwise wholly disinteresting character, but given that he uses two of the fastest styles in this sub-series he actually turns out to be a damn great character. Shang Tsung’s Snake style is not only very basic in terms of inputs, but also deals stellar damage, where the style Havik takes from Quan Chi is fantastic because of its ability to knock opponents forward, ergo knock them ever closer towards the death traps of a stage. As a result, you have a basic, derivative, slightly unique character who accidentally rocks. I’m legitimately a bit surprised.

As I bitched about a little in the last video, and back at the beginning of Deadly Alliance, moves in the 3D MK games have far too much weight to them, and often feel like they have very little impact on the opponent. There’s something bizarrely unsatisfying about them which is rather off-putting, something which was wholly fixed with the MK reboot titles. Then again, what wasn’t. I bring it up because, goddamn, something was pretty fucky in those Onaga fights. Trying to execute Havik’s Snake-style combos was horrendous because the timing just felt so off all of a sudden, especially as a result of Onaga blocking certain attacks, not to mention usually taking reduced damage. I felt this back at the time and I still feel this way, but as good as this game gets it still feels a little off. Like, it tries extremely hard in nearly all aspects, but it still feels “off” in the sense that it still manages to somehow seem lesser than the prior games in the series. A bit like how even the best Godfrey Ho film is still a bit off, which is appropriate. Most of that is down to experimentation, but it’s a point I’ll drive him even more when I eventually get to Armageddon.

On the whole, weirdly enough, Havik is pretty good. His fatalities were a real bitch to do for some reason, and seemed to have something rather glitchy about them, but I managed to perform one at the very least.

Next time, it’s a character we’ll actually be seeing twice this game.
