#1096 Mortal Kombat Deception (PS2) Hidden Characters (9/11): Kira playthrough.
A playthrough of the hidden character Kira in the PS2 version of Midway’s/Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat Deception.
Kira is another negligible, replacement character introduced in this game, and then promptly forgotten about. Which character does she replace? Well, she’s a part of the Black Dragon Clan, and she has jagged knives for weapons. Yep, she’s this game’s replacement for Kano. Why they felt the need to replace Kano rather than just include him, I don’t know. She even has Kano’s trademark Cannonball attack. However, she’s also a mismatch of other characters of well. For instance, she has Kitana’s (b+Square, b+Triangle) weapon combo. It’s really interesting looking at Deception after Deadly Alliance; you see what was carried over into the next game much, much clearer.
Kira has a couple of unique moves of her own, most notably her “Nightshade” attack, where she blows some kind of perfume (I think) and temporarily immobolises the character. It’s really reminiscent of the Batman villain Poison Ivy, and I have a sneaking suspicion that she was the main inspiration for Kira, considering how many characters in the MK series have been inspired by comics and classic action films.
On the whole, Kira is one of the “okayest” characters in the game. She still feels pretty uncreative and derivative, but at the same time there’s definitely some potential there. Potential which has yet to be realised, of course, considering she hasn’t appeared in the rebooted timeline yet. She functions perfectly fine, has a few decent combos and in general is a surprisingly inoffensive character all things considered. I couldn’t get either of her fatalities to work, mainly because the distances needed for fatalities in this game are pretty esoteric. The thing is though…with that black and red colour scheme of hers, combined with her moves, it almost seemed like she was originally supposed to be Sareena. Sareena was an obscure, fan-favourite character, originally introduced in the maligned Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, and later made playable in Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition for the GBA. This is only a theory, but I can’t help but think that was what they were going for originally. Sareena ended up getting included in Armageddon regardless, but god it would have been better if we had her here as well, especially as a hidden.
On the whole, Kira is just fine. Perfectly fine. Like so many characters in this game. Nothing special, but certainly competent enough to be usable by any regular player. Having a stun attack is always an advantage in a game like this, and combine it with a lunging attack and a projectile and you’ve got a pretty standard character.
Next up, the return of a beloved character, denied by his company.
