------------------------------------

The medieval Kingdom of Castile formed out of the county of Castile, which was a frontier county of the Kingdom of Leon. It acted as a march, and as such a lot of castles were built in the province, lending to its name, “Castile.” In 931 the county rebelled and achieved autonomous status, but in the early 1000s the kingdoms of Leon and Castile were united under one king, Ferdinand I. After Ferdinand the Firsts death, the Kingdoms of Castile, Leon and Galicia were split between his three sons: Sancho II became King of Castile, Alfonso VI, King of León and García, King of Galicia. Sancho II reunited the three kingdoms by conquering them, but the kingdoms were further divided again when later king Alfonso VII gave the Kingdom of Leon to one of his sons and the Kingdom of Castile to another.

The two kingdoms rivaled with each other until 1230 when King Ferdinand III of Castile received the Kingdom of Leon from his father. This is considered the founding of the Crown of Castile. Alfonso XI ruled the kingdoms until his death in 1350. Alfonso carried out an affair Eleanor of Guzman which produced many children. On his death, his legitimate child Peter I of Castile became king, but the illegitimate children of Alfonso rebelled against Peter, bringing us to the War of the Two Peters at the start of Meiou of Taxes. Henry of Trastamara, the most prominent of the half-brothers and illegitimate children, allied himself with France and Aragon while Peter allied with England. Henry and his alliances invaded Castile in 1369 and defeated Peter, who Henry personally killed.

In 1469 Castile and Aragon joined together in Union, Ferdinand having ruled Aragon and Isabella having ruled Castile. These two monarchs started the colonization of the New World that would see Spain control the majority of North and South America. The Reconquista, which was the conquering of Muslim held lands in the Iberian Peninsula that had been ongoing since the 800s, ended in 1492 with the conquest of the last Muslim stronghold on the Iberian Peninsula, the kingdom of Granada.
