Sometimes movie studios totally luck out with a pair of twins who can both act, and are both adorable. We’re looking at you, Mary Kate and Ashley and Cole and Dylan Sprouse. But most of the time, when a movie or TV show requires a set of twins and there aren’t any actual twins available, they’ll use one actor and just fake it! Of course, the most famous example of this is Lindsay Lohan’s career-making move as Hallie and Annie in The Parent Trap, but there are so many more! But Lindsay did it back in the day, long before every movie featured a little --or a lot of-- CGI. They used an old-school technique called The Split Screen, which meant that Lindsay had to film every scene twice, so the footage could later be cut together to make it look like both twins were in the room! Since then, actors like Nina Dobrev in The Vampire Diaries, Blake Lively in A Simple Favour, Mark Ruffalo in I Know This Much Is True, Paul Rudd in Living With Yourself, Tom Hardy in Legend, and Dove Cameron on Liv and Maddie have taken on the huge challenge of playing multiple characters at the exact same time! Some have even played up to double digits worth of people, like Tatiana Maslany did in Orphan Black. Luckily CGI has made it a lot simpler for actors to double up characters like Matt Lucas did in Alice In Wonderland, but that doesn’t make it an easy job!
