Let's have a look at another Soviet-era computer mouse, the ЕС1841.А002 Манипулятор Графической Информации (ES1841.A002 Graphical Information Manipulator). It was also apparently called the колобок (little round bun, as it's a ball mouse) or крысой (rat, as it's small).

They were apparently produced in Minsk in the Byelorussian SSR from 1987 and bundled with the ЕС1841 & ЕС1842 computer systems. From their specs., the ЕС1841 is similar to an IBM PC/XT and the ЕС1842 is an almost-IBM PC/AT (without the 80286). But they're not what this video is about so let's not worry about them further.

I got these mice from Alex ‪@ChernobylFamily‬ ... they have an excellent series of videos on the ЕС1841/1842 machines, such as:

I have two examples, both from 1991, with DE9 plugs. It utilises a single chip, the Soviet К561ЛТ1А (similar to Western CD4093), which has four Schmitt triggers with 2-input NAND gates. The inputs are tied together resulting in an inverted output (low input → high output), with two outputs accounting for X-plane movement and two accounting for Y-plane movement. This is no doubt standard for a mouse ... first time I've pulled one apart and studied in detail.

The three buttons press down on tactile switches, which don't feel very tactile ... not a very satisfying button press.

The pinout of the DE9 plug is:

Pin 1: Ground
Pin 2: Left Button
Pin 3: Centre Button
Pin 4: Right Button
Pin 5: Y- (К561ЛТ1А pin 11)
Pin 6: Vcc
Pin 7: X+ (К561ЛТ1А pin 4)
Pin 8: X- (К561ЛТ1А pin 3)
Pin 9: Y+ (К561ЛТ1А pin 10)

Note that I've labelled X/Y directions simply based on which side the light sensor is ... the X+ sensor is on the right, the X- is on the left, similarly the Y+ is on the top and Y- is on the bottom. They could very well be labelled around the wrong way ... my labelled X+ sensor actually measures leftward movement, and X- measures rightward movement. I'm not terribly fussed for this video ... maybe in a Part 2 if I can get it working with a Western machine ...
