This is the sequel to 1942, but this time around Capcom actually decided to make a very solid game instead of an irredeemable pile of junk! Everything about this game is superior to the previous one, and this time it even has actual music instead of a mess of bleeps and blops.

1943 is also one of the rare "RPG" like shoot em ups where you can permanently level up various aspects of your ship through hidden powerups littered throughout the game. I tend to start by putting 1 point into special weapon and 2 into special weapon timer, then distribute them evenly for the other upgrades (except special weapon, which I leave till the very end).

The first special weapon is really the only thing you need for the entire game, as it has an angled shot, high rate of fire, and does pretty good damage. The other weapons really don't add much and are very annoying to maintain because of constant powerup cycling required to get to them.

Like the previous game in the series, this game is very long, actually even longer than 1942 even though it has fewer levels. A full run will clock in at over 80 minutes and you only get a single life, so die once and it's game over and you need to start the whole thing from scratch (unless you use the passwords, which I do not).
