Until recently, Chevrolet's full-size Impala sedan was best known for being the large-car upgrade at the airport rental counter. But the 2015 Chevrolet Impala breaks with tradition. The folks at GM really worked on the details with this latest Impala, giving it a boldly refined exterior and a thoroughly up-to-date cabin. Here are five reasons why the Impala is one of the top sedans in its class.
Classic Cruiser
Although the Impala isn't quite a luxury sedan, you wouldn't know it from the driver seat. On the highway, the big Chevy cruises like an American car should, making the speed limit feel like half of what it really is. When the pavement gets rough, the Impala stays cool, calm and collected. Plenty of premium-brand sedans lose their way when trying to be sporty, but Impala sticks to what it's always done best. If you want a properly smooth and refined sedan, this is possibly the best solution for the money.
Limo-like Accommodations
The Lincoln Town Car may have breathed its last, but that doesn't mean that airport limo companies are out of luck. If we could choose a reasonably priced car to pick us up at the curb, the Impala would definitely be on our short list. The back seat has a ton of legroom and headroom, and the trunk is one of the largest on the planet, measuring a monumental 18.8 cu ft. Whether you're carrying people, cargo or both, the Impala's bound to please.
Strong V6
When you mat the gas, the Impala's 3.6-liter V6 whisks you to 60 miles per hour in about 6.5 seconds, but that doesn't tell the whole story. This engine really hits its stride at highway speeds; when you unleash all 305 ponies to merge or pass, there's some serious acceleration on tap. Unlike past Impalas, this one doesn't offer a V8, but the V6 gives you V8-like thrust if you need it. We like the trusty 6-speed automatic, too, for its refined demeanor and prompt, precise downshifts.
Surprising Fuel Economy
The same V6 that loves to run on the open road is actually a fuel-sipper by class standards, returning up to 28 miles per gallon. That's amazing for a motor with more than 300 horsepower. And the base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder is even better, netting 31 mpg on the highway. Still, many shoppers might want the old-school grunt of the V6, so it's a bonus that even the most powerful Impala remains respectably fuel efficient. You used to have to choose between saving fuel and hauling people and cargo, but not anymore, at least in the Impala V6's case.
Revamped Dash With Modern Tech
The previous Impala's dashboard looked like it was designed 30 years ago, but the latest layout is thoroughly up-to-date. Material quality has improved significantly, and there's even a trendy blue light strip that wraps around the dash and doors. There are a bunch of available technology features, too, including a color driver information display and the intuitive MyLink infotainment touchscreen with smartphone integration.
AutoTrader Says
If there was a most-improved award, the 2015 Chevrolet Impala would win it hands down based on how far this current model has come. Forget about rental-counter specials; the latest Impala is one of the best large sedans you can buy.
