The 2015 Hyundai Accent isn't the newest little car on the block, but it shows that older models can stay competitive with consistent updates. The Accent has been tweaked so much over the past few years that it almost feels like a new model, and it helps that it was a pretty solid effort to begin with. This is one subcompact car that won't make you feel like you went cheap. Here are five reasons to see what Hyundai's cooking these days.
Rewarding and Efficient Powertrain
The Accent keeps it simple under the hood, with a 4-cylinder engine and either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic. The manual's pretty fun and precise, which is surprising given that stick shifts in this segment tend to feel like afterthoughts. We also admire the automatic for its unusually quick yet smooth shifts. As for fuel economy, it's simply excellent: 38 miles per gallon on the highway with the manual and 37 mpg with the automatic. That's one reason why people buy small cars, and the Accent brings home the bacon.
Grown-up Styling
Both the sedan and hatchback versions of the Accent are more stylish than you'd expect at this price. The grille, headlights and taillights have all been recently redesigned, and the result is a surprisingly premium vibe. Some economy cars scream "cheap" when you see them on the street, but the Accent's a classy ride. It actually looks a lot like the one-size-up Elantra, which is one of the classiest cars in its segment.
Compliant Ride
Subcompact cars aren't known for their pillow-soft rides, but the Accent bucks the trend. Thanks to supple dampers and generous suspension travel, the Accent takes rough pavement in stride. If your commute involves some tough roads, the Accent's as absorbent as little cars get. Hyundai sells this car around the world in some pretty rustic places, so you know it's been designed to take a pounding.
Plentiful Standard Features
Even the base Accent comes with power everything, and there's a USB port and a 6-speaker audio system that sounds pretty solid. If you want more, available features include Bluetooth streaming audio, rear disc brakes and a sunroof. There's plenty of kit to choose from on this runabout, and even top-of-the-line models won't break the bank.
Adult-Sized Space
The Accent's front seats are impressively roomy, with ample headroom for those taller than six feet, while the rear seats are also 6-footer-friendly in the outboard positions. As for cargo, the Accent sedan provides an above-average 13.7-cu ft. trunk, while the hatchback's rear seatbacks fold down to open up a crossover-like 47.5 cu ft. That's a lot more than you'd expect from the average subcompact hatch.
AutoTrader Says
The 2015 Hyundai Accent is once again a top pick among subcompacts. We wouldn't buy a car in this class without sampling the Hyundai first.
