2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross | CarGurus Test Drive Review

Mitsubishi revives the Eclipse name, if not its legacy, with the 2018 Eclipse Cross. It packages bold styling with an impressive array of safety systems, all for an affordable price. But while the Eclipse Cross reveals Mitsubishi’s potential as a direct competitor to larger brands like Honda and Toyota, there are still many areas ripe for improvement.
The Eclipse Cross succeeds under the hood, with a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine good for 152 horsepower and 182 pound-feet of torque. Spritely acceleration belies the continuously variable transmission (and the CVT’s available paddle-shifter manual mode). Mitsubishi’s own all-wheel-drive system, known as S-AWC, is available on the base trim and standard on all others.
While the Eclipse Cross’s engine feels like a finished product, the interior and infotainment systems feel incomplete. Switchgear has clearly been pulled from the older Mitsubishi Outlander, and although the Eclipse Cross enjoys a new infotainment system, it still lacks basic necessities like physical tuning and volume knobs.
