Want a safe, reliable, and athletic-looking compact hatchback? Consider the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback. Brand new, this little car rides on a new platform designed for spirited driving, and is fitted with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 168 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. Drivers have the option of either a standard 6-speed manual transmission or an excellent continuously variable transmission (CVT). The automatic CVT is so good, Chris Wardlaw calls it the best available today.
The racy, aggressive styling on the Corolla Hatchback works well, but the short rear dimensions leave little space for luggage. Toyota claims 18 cubic feet behind the rear seats, although a full-size suitcase takes up much of that real estate. On the bright side, you and your belongings will be very safe, thanks to Toyota’s decision to include Toyota Safety Sense as standard equipment on both the SE and XSE trims.
