54Kia’s new EV6 is an electric Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) that rides their new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), and will be available in both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. The unique platform and electric powertrain layout allow the EV6 to maximize interior volume while maintaining relatively compact exterior dimensions. Shoppers can expect cabin space to match a mid-sized SUV, and the EV6’s 2,900mm wheelbase is on par with the gasoline-powered Kia Telluride SUV. Look for 520 litres of trunk space with the second-row seats in place, approximately 1,300 litres with second-row seats folded, and a front trunk with an additional 52 litres of stowage space for 2WD models and 20 litres for AWD models.
According to Kia, the EV6 intends to satisfy the crossover shopper looking for convenience, sustainability and tech, and seating for 5. The popular Telluride targets those after larger seating and towing requirements, as it’s considered a full-sized SUV with third-row seating and an 2,268 kilogram towing capacity.
At this writing, the Kia EV6 is still undergoing testing and validation, though an early press release says that the EV6 can tow up to 1,600 kilograms provided the battery charge level is above 35 per cent. A Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese battery pack is offered in both 58.0 and 77.4 kWh capacities. Combined with either one or two electric motors available in 70, 160 and 270 kW outputs, the EV6 is available in various configurations and power levels, just like competitor models from Tesla, Ford, and the upcoming Subaru Solterra.
Regarding the EV6, shoppers can look for up to 510 kilometres of range from a single charge, and the high-performing EV6 GT model, complete with 576 horsepower, can run from 0-60 in less than 3.5 seconds. With 800-volt ultra fast-charge capability, charging from 10 to 80 percent takes just 18 minutes on a compatible charger, with 100 kilometres of charging taking less than 5 minutes. For perspective, Stats Canada says the average Canadian spends about 40 kilometres per day commuting. The EV6 also features Vehicle to Load (V2L) functionality, allowing it to power high-draw electric devices, or even charge another EV.
