3500BC Medway Neolithic Monolith Coldrum Long Barrow Kent UK Ancient Burial Chamber
0Welcome to Coldrum Longbarrow in Kent UK, we came across this while out on our electric mountain bikes we recently purchased, We cycle around north kent just to keep fit at our age.
Coldrum's Neolithic Long Barrow is tucked away, near Trottiscliffe in the Kent countryside and is one of Medway's three monoliths. It has beeen dated to around 3500BC, It has been under the protection of the National Trust since 1926, when it was bought in the memory of Benjamin Harrison (1837-1921) from Igtham, a local groces and archaeologist. This communal burial chamber has given up the remains of 22 people of both sexes and all ages from the very young to the very old. It is believed they were of the same family.
It is import to remember that Coldrums Long Barrow is not a graveyard, but rather a communal tomb. It was the custom to lay bodies to rest elsewhere, and place their bones in a tomb some time later. There was two phases of burials at Coldrum. The first was between 3985 and 3855 BC, and the second phase was around 200 years later.
The original barrow was rectangular, containing a rectangular burial chamber, and covered by an earth mound which has eroded or been removed over time. During medieval times these kind of burial chambers were considered unholy and many were destroyed or used as building materials. It is thought that the original barrow also had standing stones, around its four sides similar to Stonehenge.
It's hard to believe that this monolith is around 1000 years older than the pyramids in Eygpt which were built around 2550 to 2490 BC.

My pal & I got these Mountain EBike's May 2022, as we are over the hill and wanted to get back into Cycling we thought this would be a good option for our fitness level :)
I used to do a lot of road cycling when I was younger around County Durham & North Yorkshire + Central London.
My Pal is mostly a MTB and Motorbike rider, he likes the trails jumps and getting muddy.
I tend to just follow as I never know where im going, but also he never knows where hes going either :)
