2THE ROYAL ENGINEERS MUSEUM CHATHAM
Riding along Prince Arthur's Rd in Gillingham recently we came across a great collection of tanks.
A few yards further on we came across the entry to the Royal Engineers Museum.
The museum started its life as a personal collection of Major Pasley in 1812, and continued by
Sgt Maj James Ford in Woolwich. The collection was brought to Chatham in 1856
The Royal Engineers known as 'Sappers' was formed in 1716 and are multi skilled combat soldiers, mostly associated with bridge building.
The 1964 film Zulu conveys this perfectly. Those of you familiar with the film will know that 11 Victoria Crosses were won, including those won by Lt. Bromead (Michael Caine) and Lt. Chard for their bravery during the battle of Rourke's Drift in 1879. We discovered that the impressive museum building designed by a Royal Enginner architect in 1905, houses many military memorabilia including replica copies of the Victoria Cross Medals for 56 recipients including the two mentioned above.
In front of the Museum. stand two very old and impressive Cannons, captured in 1885 as part of the Anglo Burmese War. They are believed to be between 100-300 years old and are very ornately decorated. The carriages supporting them are 100 years old made of mahogany in Woolwich.
This Museum houses 25 Victoria Crosses, Wellington Map of Waterloo, Chards Weapons form Zulu War, The Bridge Laying Tanks you see, Chinese Silks, First Guided Torpedo, a Harrier Jump Jet and a V2 Rocket, I wish I'd gone inside now.
