442: REAL GENESIS HARDWARE: SAGAIA, then STIMPY'S INVENTION (1st play)
As promised (repeatedy), another Sega Genesis real hardware special!
First game is SAGAIA (though more folks in chat know it as Darius II). This is a classic but tough shoot-em-up with branching pathways and some neat bosses. I particularly have a vendetta against the Seahorse from Hell mid-boss now. My impression is that it's one of those games that you can beat with a lot of practice, once you memorize the levlels. A lot of practice; I'm not exactly a shmup master. Classic title all the same.
This is my first time ever playing STIMPY'S INVENTION, based on a cartoon from the early 90s that my parents didn't let me watch because the visuals looked too drug-induced. We play as both an irate chihuaha and an idiotic manx cat as they try to find the scattered pieces of an machine that will turn garbate into food, so that they can reassemble it and then shut it off. (?) It's a really fun cartoony platformer aimed at kids with graphics, sound effects, and voices all on point, though the difficulty is enough that you won't beat it on the first day. Specifically, the bicycle chase in the third stage seems nearly impossible until you've memorized the pattern, and that's as far as I get each time. "You stupid eedeeot!" Ugh, auto-scrolling levels. As if the cart rides from Taz-Mania and Cutthroat Island weren't torture enough. I'll definitely play more of this and would have loved it as a kid.
Other random stream highlighs include unsealing a big box, inexplicable snippets of 1950s and 1960s songs, something about a flash animation with a hippo, discussion of Playstation shump compilations, a visit from a lion, and discussing the American Girl doll catalogues.
