441: Leader Of The Quack! (DONALD DUCK: GOIN' QUACKERS, day 1)
God I love Donald, used to watch tapes of those old theatrical cartoons as a lad. Time to play a Disney PC game, just like last year. I've been wanting to play this one for YEARS but could never get my copy working on modern PCs. Until now (all but the opening and ending cutscenes, at least), and it does take some doing! DONALD DUCK: GOIN' QUACKERS (or QUACK ATTACK in Europe) is better known as a console game. It's from the PS1 era, and several folks in chat observe how similar it is to Crash Bandicoot, which I should play someday.
The evil Merlock, who folks of my generation will remember from the Ducktales movie, has taken Daisy Duck, along with having evil plans, and Donald Duck and Gladstone Gander are in a race to save him. He also enchanted some of Huey, Dewey, and Louie's toys, so they're going to block Donald's progress until he gets them all back, because who cares about some reporter's life being in danger when there are twelve teddy bears at stake?
The target audience is probably a little younger than me, as I finish two of hte four worlds and only break a little bit of a sweat on the Beagle Boy boss. The gameplay is good fun, and I like the mix of 2D and 3D levels. After beating the second boss, chat points out that there are chase levels and time trials I've unlocked, so I go back to do all of those so far and unlock new costumes. I bet I could actually 100% this game with just a little practice (and have a great time doing it). As someone who grew up with World of Illusion and a few other 16-bit Disney titles, it's great to see they were still making some solid games ten years later! Why DON'T they re-release this on GOG?
The intro really does look good for its age. Now, if I could just get it to play in game instead of usying VLC media player, and get it to have sound.
