Video Transcript:
Have you ever wondered if you could play AAA games on your Ultrabook? Well, this is Rainbow 6 Siege running at over 100 frames per second at highest the setting on a low spec’ed Dell laptop with an integrated Intel GPU.
Welcome to VertexGaming, and today, I will be reviewing Nvidia’s GeForce Now service, which believes that it may have solved the notorious problem which the hindered a wider adoption of AAA PC titles and which allows you to play them on pretty much any PC or MAC, as long as you have access to a high a speed internet connection. Utilizing a GeForce 980ti graphics card, we’re going to compare the direct feed footage of Rainbow 6 siege from the laptop which runs the game via the GeForce Now service and the PC, which runs the game in the spectator mode locally. As you see from this footage, the main difference is attributed compression artifacts. Softer image quality, color banding, due to compression, slight loss of detail, which becomes apparent when we look at small, but highly detailed objects such as the operator icons in the heads-up display.
In the quest of optimizing the responsiveness of the game and cramming as much video data as possible, NVIDIA GeForce now does an amazing job of maintaining some remarkable visual quality. I know what you’re thinking now. “How about input lag”, you’d say? Well, it’s a very valid question, as clicking the mouse and waiting for a shot to fire in a game such as Rainbow 6 siege, may have instant repercussions. That is the main reason why I’ve picked this game for my test. I’ve played a casual game against players who were playing the game on their local machines, and I was able to perform all the usual trick as if the game was running on my home computer. It is for certain, that I felt a slightly longer reaction time, which you brain naturally adjusts within several rounds. Then I’ve decided to measure the actual added input lag.
Measuring the input lag from a keyboard connected to both devices, I’ve calculated a latency in the range of 33 to 75 ms., which is remarkable. Remember, the game is actually running at a server, which is able to keep up with an astounding amount of data feed within 75 ms .
Overall, I am VERY impressed by GeForce now. It is certainly the future of Neflix-like consumption model for video games. In its current state, GeForce now presents a remarkable achievement by NVidia, which is only bottlenecked by our lackluster internet infrastructure. Nvidia promises up to 120 fps in games. I can attest to that. I even ran the game at it’s highest setting, with AA at it’s highest preset at the maximum allowable resolution of 2,560 × 1,600. The game ran as a champ on the virtual GPU with 25 GB of VRAM.
If you have a fast internet connection of at least 25 MB/s, you should absolutely try it out.
