Video Transcript:

Hello and welcome to vertex gaming. The release of the new XBOX ONE X console is upon us. Microsoft console is thought to be the most powerful game console ever built. With 8 TF of power under the hood, many of the existing titles are said to receive a 4K upgrade. Though is it an impressive jump, but a relatively recent Digital foundry article mentioned that 8TF will not be enough to produce a native 4K experience for all games. For some games, Techniques such as dynamic resolution scaling and checkerboarding might be employed to upscale games to full 4K from, say 1800P or so. Some of the visually complex titles might also be confined to 4K 30 FPS, but others might be bumped up to 4K 60! As many gamers strive for a fluid gameplay, they would prefer the higher 60 fps frame rate. But can the new XBOX One X deliver such a high refresh rate in some of the popular and visually demanding titles? Well, we will try to answer that question. For that, we have referred to a recent PC world article, which suggested a PC part list that tries to match XBOX one X specs at around $650 at the time of recording of this video. We have purchased the parts and assembled a PC, which will allow us to simulate the power of XBOX One X and try to extrapolate the performance of the console with respect to Play Anywhere titles also available on PC. Though this technique is very rough and it does not account for deep hardware and software optimizations of the XBOX ONE X, it will give us a rough estimate of the expected framerate in 4k games. We cannot predict exactly how well will games will run on the console, but will be able to either confirm or rule out 4K 30 or 60 in play anywhere titles.
For this comparison, we have used a mix oh high and medium settings for the game. We have also set the dynamic resolution scaler to 20%. For the frame rate lock, we have used the MSI Afterburner Utility and the Riva tuner solution. We chose a complex night scene with a large amount of shadows, effects and NPC’s to stress our system and see the worst case scenario. As a result, we were able to get a stable 30 frames per second experience at 4K resolution, however, upon unlocking the frame-rate, our frame counter never went up over 48 frames per second. This suggests that, though frame rates higher than 30 are definitely possible, even in complex scenes such as this one and with aforementioned optimizations, but most likely 60 fps will not be feasible, due to a largely inconsistent prospective gameplay experience. We would also like to mention that the game looks absolutely gorgeous at even 4K 30, and it represents a significant graphical upgrade even without HDR enabled. For the rest of the video, we will leave you with a full screen 4K footage of the game to enjoy.
