Quantum Break is a game developed by Remedy, the studio behind Max Payne and Allan Wake. Quantum Break is a well-crafted 3rd person adventyure game, with a captivating fictional story that revolves around a quantum theory of time travel and one that brings about human moral dillemas that come about upon gaining control over this phenomenon. To say just that about Quantum Break is to not say anything about this wonderful game. I'd keep XBOX ONE X this performance projection video spoiler free for those who are going to play it for the first time.
It has become costomary that Remedy likes to make relatively risky, untraditional and ambitious game design choices, which have so far been proven to be successfull, looking at companie's track record. Besides the captivating story, amazing, post processing heavy game design, Quantum Break even has a full episodic TV show which ships with the game.
.
If we track back to the release of the game on the original XBOX ONE, we see that it runs at a relatively stable 720p 30 frames per second frame rate, which is very impressive, considering the complexity of the game and it's heavy use of post processing effects, such as film grain, motion blur and chromatic aberation to name the few. There are many more effects, which can be toggled on a PC, whcih makes our pre-built PC analog a great candidate for determining what setting will result the best 4k performance on the XBOX ONE X. By the way, if you haven't seen our previous XBOX ONE X analysis videos, where we've discussed the our testing methadology, specs and the projected XBOX ONE X performance for Gears of War, Forza Horizon 3 and the Rise of the Tomb raider, be sure to check them out by clicking on the annotation above or the link in the video description.
Well, let's talk about visual quality first. Quantum Break on the original XBOX ONE was rendered at native 720P with temporal filtering and output to 1080P. despite that, the game presentation was a bit soft, but very impressive, considering the hardare. We've determined that quantum break ran at graphical setting equivalent to PC medium settings, with slightly higher texture resolution. A 4K upgrade for the title will mean that all must stay the same, but resolution, the texture quality and filtering must be increased to justify an increase in base resolution.
Take a look at THIS image quality comparison for a moment. Here the game runs at medium settings, high textures at a 1440P resolution with the upscaler option on. In our opinion, the resoution upscaler represents some sort of a temporal anti-aliasing soluton, where the base render resolution is effectively halfed and then upscaled to increase performance. Here you can see the visual difference between the two. The 1440ppresentation is much cleaner and sharper. finally, here you can see the game running at a native 4K or 2160P resolution. The image quality is noticeably improved. However, the jump in quiality is less drastic, when comparing the original 720P and 1440p. Now let's take a look at how the game performed at various resoluton settings.
We ran the game at medium settings, with texture quality at high and a 4K resolution, which resulted in an unplayable framerate of about 20 frames per second with dips as low as 15 FPS. Upon enabling a the built in upscaler, our frame rate at same settings and 4K went all the way up to 30 frames per second, however it stayed inconsistent during more demanding fight engagements. Next, we've tried to drop the resolution down to 1440P, keeping the resolution upscaler option on, and the game ran at much higher frame rate of above 40 frames per second. Locking the frame rate to 30 frames per second in this scenario resulted in a consistent and enjoyable gaming expeience. We've tried to push our luck even further and tried acheiveing 60 frames per second, by enabling the resoution upscaler. That drastically improved our frame rate, increasing it to an average of 45 frames per second, with occasional spikes at 60. But the performance range was very wide and inconsistent.
In conclusion, if our PC equivalent set up is a close match to an XBOX ONE X performance, we've determined that Quantum Break on the XBOX ONE X is most likely to run at 1440p and with graphical settings representing a mixed bag of medium and high PC settings. With XBOX ONE X's specific optimizations, SoC, shared high badwith memory, we think that the fnial texture resolution will be at a PC equivalent of "HIGH".
