Doom is Legendary amongst gamers. Released in 1993 by ID software, Doom puts you in the shoes of an unnamed space marine that is tasked with heading to mars and taking on the hordes of hell. It's gory, frantic and bloody hard at times and I love it. Today we are covering five funfacts about Doom.

5. The protagonist of Doom has no name. The space marine is often referred to by fans as "Doom Guy" but the game's lead designer John Romero says "There was never a name for the Doom marine because it's supposed to be you" So according to Mr. Romero I am a badass Demon slayer, I'll take that.

4. Doom was released as 'Shareware' for those too young to know what shareware is, during the early 90's game publishers would release a portion of their game free to share with no registration or DRM and if you liked the game and wanted more you could purchase the full game directly from the publisher. This shareware model helped the game have such an install base it was reported in 1995 that Doom was installed on more computers than even Windows 95. This caught the attention of Microsoft's Bill Gates who considered buying ID but this deal never went ahead. l

3. Games can often cause people to procrastinate and impact productivity, especially in the workplace. ID was impacted by their own creation when employees spent company time playing Doom. Jay Wilbur ID's CEO said in an interview with the Washington Post "We had to have conversations with some of our people. Projects weren't getting done." So some employees were too busy playing games to make games.

2. Doom is well known for its music and the references it makes to rock music and artists. A lesser known fact is in 1995 the guitarist of the rock band Nazareth Manny Charlton sent John Romero a tape containing a song now titled 'Blood on the Walls' inspired by the game and a note that read "For all the guys and gals at ID who came up with the coolest game this side of hell, kick some demon butt to this!" So ID was getting fan songs years before YouTube!

1. Doom was nearly connected to the Alien franchise. It was considered that ID would strike a deal with Universal Films to create a game set in the Alien universe however it became clear that doing this would lose the development team a large amount of creative freedom so this idea was scrapped.
