#590 Primal Rage 2 Boss: Necrosan gameplay and glitches.
Gameplay of the final boss Necrosan in Atari's Primal Rage 2/ II, in Gruntzilla94's Primal Rage 2 emulator.
This video is dedicated to the incredible Gruntzilla94, without whom this would not have been possible. He has spent years of his life helping to make this game playable when no one else would heed the call. To say he is an exceptional individual would be an understatement. His extensive dedication to this game has been completely and totally remarkable. I recommend anyone who watches this video to head by his channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/Gruntzilla94) and thank him for making something a reality most people doubted would ever even happen. It's the least he deserves.

Holy shit. This was a day I didn't think was going to happen for a long time, but here we are. Primal Rage 2 is a playable state. I won't deny that I've dreamt about this day. Finally being able to play one of the inaccessible fighting games of old, in the same league as Fighting Bujutsu and Battle Tryst, although even Bujutsu was somewhat playable before Primal Rage 2. PR2's rom was dumped onto the internet years ago, but it wasn't playable in the slightest. Thanks to the extensive efforts of Gruntzilla, Primal Rage 2 is now playable. It's not perfect by any means, and it never will be as it is an alpha. But it's a damn wonderful thing that we can finally play it.
Rage 2 is a weird game. A very, very weird game. I expected it to be similar to Killer Instinct, and it somewhat is, yet also isn't in the slightest. Confusing I know, but you'll just have to try it out for yourselves to get what I mean. It's a combo heavy game with the insufferable move inputs of the original game, making for a fighting game which I find lacks flow. I spoke about the game to fellow boss enthusiast Torentsu, and he mentioned having played it in person at Galloping Ghosts, as well as not particularly enjoying it. And I can safely say that I do agree with that sentiment. As with Tattoo Assassins, I can totally see why this game got canned. In terms of design I think it looks absolutely fantastic. The music too is really quite good. In terms of actual gameplay though, it feels like a game three years out of a date for what it actually is. Indeed, it appears the game was actually built on top of the original Primal Rage, or that the way it developed only began when they were already some time into the project. That makes sense though, as Necrosan was originally meant to be added to an updated version of Primal Rage 1. And oh, you can tell.
Rage 2 is rather infamous as the original characters serve as both bosses and hidden characters, as well as the super moves of the playable characters. In this alpha version, they're extremely easy to access, simply requiring the player to highlight a character and press and hold the up direction until the dino-god appears.
So, the legendary boss of the game, who's never had gameplay of his own up until this point, is Necrosan, an amazing looking skeleton-dragon who looks like something straight out of Dungeons and Dragons. He utilises a variety of attacks, mostly stemming from lightning powers and various grab holds. He hits harder than most characters, but his combos seem on the whole more difficult to pull off. Necrosan, however, just isn't hugely fun to fight as. He's glitchy to play as for a start, with attempted super moves causing the game to freeze up (in a game which, as you can see, still has problems with freezing up), but there's one really main issue with Necrosan. He's slow. Oh god is he fucking slow. Many of his regular attacks come out decently fast, but the problem is that his special moves nearly all have some kind of charge up period. And while they do give him some interesting capabilities, with one grab temporarily stunning a character if it hits, and a black hole projectile which works well for zoning, the problem is that they all have a delayed execution. And here's the thing about the game. Rage 2 has one of the single most bullshit difficult AIs in existence. I mean, it is absolutely brutal. It will counter everything you do, combo you from nothing, and just generally find ways to stop you dead in your tracks. You block high? They hit low. You back away? They spam you with projectiles. You jump in? They dragon-punch you. It's a bit maddening, and it's not helped by the fact that the game likes to freeze up on fights with Necrosan in them. Sadly, he is a very, very limited boss, and rather disappointing nothing to really write home about. But, I suppose you can't expect too much from an alpha. He's hard-hitting, but too slow to be very formidable in a game with this level of combo-heaviness. A boss who is made broken by the AI more than anything else, which might appeal to you depending on how you like your boss fights.
