597: Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution PS2 \\ (New control scheme?!?) Knockdown Clash - Jacky Quest!
Post-main-quest with Jacky Bryant in Quest mode of Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution on PS2, heading into Event Square's underground fighting arena to try the first event: Knockdown Clash!
Also, trying to find a button control layout for my arcade stick that will keep my from bearing down on my right shoulder, which I tend to do in long sessions when I can plant my hand firmly on the base of the stick.
After I beat Knockdown Clash, I kept playing around with it while testing different button layouts:
0:00 - got button confused 'p'
12:40 - Clash 1
17:40 - Clash 2
32:50 - button 1
35:30 - button 2
39:20 - button 3
43:30 - button 4
51:20 - button 5
57:54 - wrap??
For the button layout, for other fighting games in the past I've managed to stop myself from weighing down on my right arm while playing by setting the buttons apart, so my hand has to stay mobile over the stick, moving back and forth to the buttons, instead of being able to stay planted in one spot. For VF, I've just been using
xGPK
xxxx
But I noticed my shoulder being unhappy recently, so I thought maybe I should try splitting them up. If I wanted a sort of VF arcade-style button layout, I could do
xPxK
xGxx
but when I tried that, I could still feel a certain urge to press down through the arm with the thumb on Guard. Keeping Guard where I'd had it, where I use it with the index finger, and just moving Punch below Guard, instead, felt really weird at first, but seemed to force me to play a little lighter on the buttons:
xGxK
xPxx
Even without my palm pressing down (yet) on the base of the stick, though, there's still some constant pressure coming up the arm through the index finger while holding the Guard button.
The problem is having any button that you have to *hold* down--in VF's case, Guard. Having to hold anything continually is probably just a bad idea, ergonomically. The solution? Stop holding Guard. Stop guarding at all!
This would solve the certain problem you've no doubt seen when I play VF which is that much of the time I'm standing there, rooted to the spot, holding Guard. This works okay against the AI because the AI is sort of dumb; it isn't really very fun, though. If I couldn't Guard, I'd have to stay much more mobile! That might be fun!
I'd have to knock the Quest mode difficulty down to the easier setting (Beginner instead of Standard, or whatever?), I think. Even then it might be pretty hard to pull off, I dunno. Worth a shot?
Here's what I'm thinking: a Punch button, a Kick button, a Guard+Punch button--we'll call that Throw--and a Guard+Kick button, which we'll call uhh Roundhouse. So it would be a four-button split-column layout on my arcade stick like I'm using for KOF, CvSP, and Tekken, with the buttons as follows:
xPxK
xTxR
YEah!

The static I was hearing was indeed only on my local output--my cheap, generic vacuum tube kit headphone amp is just putting out some static now when both tubes are plugged in simultaneously; if I remove one tube, the static goes away. So I just have to run with one tube and turn the volume up a little more (stereo still works; the amp just has less overall power output, apparently). Eh well it held up for a few years so far I guess; if it ever fritzes out with just one tube I'll actually have to get a real headphone amp from a real sound gear store--like Sweetwater--something like this, maybe: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HeadAmp4--art-headamp-4-4-channel-headphone-amplifier --instead of just flailing around for something on Amazon, which is how I ended up with this thing.
