Sifu is a Beat’em up game developed and published by Sloclap which inspired by classic Kung Fu movie classics. The game starts off in China with you playing a man named Yang accompanied by Fajar, Sean, Kuroki and Jinfeng during their raid in a martial arts school of which Yang is a disgraced student in order to obtain a mysterious artifact. At the end, Yang confronts and fights the Sifu of the school which ends with him killing the latter. Looking for the artifact, Yang notices the Sifu’s child hiding in a closet whom he later orders Fajar to kill. However, when Yang’s group left the area, the child suddenly was revived by the artifact his/her father left him. Eight years later, the child would grow up to be a martial artist and would start his/her path of vengeance against the group who killed his/her father. Would he be successful in getting in getting his revenge against Yang and his group, or will he find another path?

The game would receive above average metacritic scores which are around 79 (PC) and 81 (PS5 and Switch). Praises were generally attributed to its combat action, enemy AI, unique age progression mechanic, replayability, and aesthetics. Anent the criticisms, the short length of the game, the bland story and characters, bad camera angles, the shallow investigation mechanic and its weak roguelike game structure that tend to cause unnecessary grinding in the game. Finally, the reacting to the learning curve/trial-and-error in the game were mixed.

As for me, I really loved this game and is one of my favorites in 2022. First, I like the theme of the game which is a big nod to the classic Kung Fu films such as Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee films. It gives you the nostalgia of such classics and is a nice tribute to the culture in China. I also liked the Beat’em up gameplay mechanic which are smooth, interactive and hard but fair. As for the graphics, although it does not give you overly nice views or details, it’s still artistic in its own way and is pleasing in the eyes. For the story though, its just a shallow and simple story of revenge and enlightenment and is basic or average at best. The age progression was mixed for me. Although it is a new and fresh mechanic in gaming, I found it a hassle sometimes and would make the game more difficult the more you die. Still though, I did not find it that too bad. Overall, this is a recommended game for action and Beat’em up fans or those who considers harder difficulty in choosing their game. Enjoy the walkthrough!!!
