65 - The Last of Us With DINOSAURS!
Greetings my Movie Geeks!
I've seen a lot of reviews that suggest 65 is a bad movie, but it's not. It's a B-Movie, that stays on a serious track, and given the premise it's understandable why it works.

If you like dinosaurs, spaceships, survival movies, and Adam Driver, then you’re gonna love 65.
Directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, and starring Adam Driver, Ariana Greenblatt and literally two others, 65 is a survival action horror set during the prehistoric era of 65 Million Years Ago, at the reign of the dinosaurs.
An Astronaut, Mills, becomes stranded on a wild planet which happens to be earth during the dinosaur period, to escape, he along with the only other surviving member of the ship, Koa. A similar premise to M Night Shyamalan’s After Earth, the characters have to get from one part of the ship to the other without becoming the main course for a selection of dinosaurs.
A quick backstory showing us the family dynamic of Mills and what he’s left behind as well as introducing him to Koa and we have the family drama to fill out the jumps and scares from the rest of the film.
This is a B Movie, yet it is trying to be much more than that. The characters are relatable, and sympathetic, and with everything tht is thrown at them when they start walking the 15km to the other half of the ship, you can’t stop yourself from routing for them.
The dinosaurs aren’t perfect, and it’s gnawing that we’ve been seeing CG dinosaurs since 1993 and we’re still not getting perfect dinosaurs. What we do get in 65 is adequate looking Dino’s, and the ones we get close up with are ok, if a little stylised. But I suppose all dinosaurs are artistic stylised versions. We get one interaction in the film with a nice dinosaur, but that is short lived and then everything else is out to get you.
Some nice homages to Jurassic Park, a dinosaur eye through a window, a muddy dinosaur footprint, but a film about dinosaurs is going to remind you of the 30-year-old classic.
I can see some people will not like this. It may not get the bums in seats that it should as it is up against Scream 6, but 65 is an entertaining romp from start to finish. The use of jump scares, and frights keep you on your toes, and I’ll admit, I jumped a fair few times.
It’s funny, because the last time I watched a concept of Sci-fi and Dinosaurs was the Doctor Who Episode Dinosaurs on a spaceship, and Watching 65 it felt like, this is what that Doctor Who episode should have been. Jump scares, dinosaur gore, the relentless ticking down of a larger threat heading towards you. It all adds up to a film that is fun, and you don’t have to think about it.
The finale gives us everything we could have asked for in a film about dinosaurs and spaceships. The final battle ups the ante to a point where you’re expecting Dino’s to crawl out of every corner. And then all hell breaks loose.
It isn’t the most adventurous of plot, but it seems to be a trend for films and shows to have the older man leading the young child through dangerous territory. I’m surprised Pedro Pascal wasn’t asked to play Mills, seeing as this is his area of expertise. But this isn’t The Last of Us, or even The Mandalorian, but you will have fun watching it.
I would urge you all to make time to visit the cinema and watch 65, because it’s one of those rare entries that doesn’t care what it is and has as much fun doing it as you will watching it.
