7 Features Baldur’s Gate 3 Should Steal From Descent Into Avernus
With Baldur’s Gate 3’s gameplay reveal fast approaching we’ve been looking at Descent Into Avernus, the Dungeons and Dragons campaign that sets up the story of BG3 and will lend ideas to the game. But what ideas should Baldur’s Gate III steal from Avernus? From demon deals to infernal war machines, here are out seven top picks.
There’s no new Baldur’s Gate 3 gameplay in this video - we’ve used the Baldur’s Gate 3 trailer from last year and images from D&D Decent Into Avernus to explain our choices. Don’t worry if you haven’t played the campaign book: we avoid story spoilers and focus on the mechanics and rules that we think could transfer to a CRPG. For starters, the Baldur’s Gate 3 story picks up where Avernus ends, establishing an intriguing relationship between the city and the first layer of hell. Does this mean our heroes will descend into the pit once again? It could be an interesting setting, with its pools of mutating Demon Ichor and infernal war machines that turn the campaign into something resembling Mad Max in Hell.
Descent Into Avernus also introduces diabolical deals, where you barter your soul for demonic prizes, and the idea of the ‘dark secret’ - a past crime that bonds your party together. Both of these could work brilliantly with Larian Studios love of co-op: imagine trying to work together while a secret tears the group apart, or secret devil pacts cause people to fall out. When the BG3 gameplay reveal happens, we really hope to see some of these ideas. Oh, and there’s an angelic elephant called a Hollyphant that can kill with the sound of its trunk. It’s one of the sillier ideas in the Avernus D&D rules, but no sillier than the squirrel knight we got in Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition.
This is all speculation and wishful thinking, of course. For actual Baldur’s Gate 3 news we have to wait for the PAX East reveal later this month. Hey, at least it’ll make a change from rewatching the original Baldur’s Gate 3 teaser over and over. There’s only so many times you can watch a man burst into a squid before it gets weird. Please do share your thoughts on the game below - if you’ve played Descent Into Avernus, is there anything you’d like to see Larian pinch for BG3? Share your thoughts, but keep it spoiler-light, if you would. Thanks for watching this video. If you enjoyed it, please do click like and subscribe.
