The 7th Guest was developed by the US development studio Trilobyte Games, founded in 1991. Founders Rob Landeros and Graeme Devine had always wanted to create a horror game that would push the boundaries of the era, and with the CD, they finally had a medium at their disposal that made this dream come true. So, they produced cutscenes with real actors, shot in front of a green screen and then superimposed onto the backgrounds. This was a rather large technical experiment at the time, one that many other studios either shied away from or completely botched. One that many studios hadn't even seriously attempted. As for the gameplay, they wanted to forgo classic inventory puzzles and instead incorporate smaller mini-games and logic puzzles to give the whole thing a more timeless feel.

The story of The Seventh Guest begins in 1935 and tells the story of Henry Stauf, a homeless man living on the streets, trying to survive through petty theft and crime. One day, however, he went too far and killed a woman by stealing her purse. Afterward, he was tormented by nightmares. Strangely, these dreams, which kept him awake at night, weren't about the cruel deed he had just committed, but about visions of a child's doll. The next day, he carved the doll, creating a perfect replica of the toy from his dreams. He traded it for food and lodging at a nearby tavern. This was the beginning of a series of visions that, in turn, made Stauf a successful toymaker, making the town's children happy with his creations.

For a while, everything seemed to be going well; Stauf even earned enough money to afford a mansion on the outskirts of town. But then things changed. All the children who owned one of Stauf's toys became inexplicably ill and died....
