Gameplay of the hidden character Hyena in SNK’s King of Fighters Maximum Impact 2/King of Fighters 2006.

Hyena is the joke character of the game, as if that nose and demeanour of his didn’t give it away instantly. He’s an awkward, comical fighter, and basically the Dan Hibiki of the game. That said, he’s a pretty competent character, with some decent change combos and actually pretty nice special moves, including card projectile, a spinning dragon punch-esque move, and a triple over-head kick special. He also has his own unique stance while he’s laying on the floor, which gives him access to unique moves including his level one super, where he rises from the ground in a powerful combo. He can get into this stance from a number of different moves, including running special move which links into a belly flop attack or a kick combo, depending on the button used afterwards.

His level two and three supers are even more interesting. His level two super sees him throw out a much of damaging playing cards, which trap the opponent in a damage storm and allow him to execute further attacks as they’re caught in it (similar to a super move Chizuru had in KOF 96.) His level three super is where his obvious Dan Hibiki inspiration really shines through however. He attempts a punch…before failing it, rolling over, and then suddenly taking off 75% of the opponent’s life. Yeah. 75%. I’m fairly certain it’s the most damaging super in the entire game, and goddamn is it amazing. Indeed, SNK made Hyena into a high-risk, high-reward type character, allowing him to stand on his own two feet despite technically being a joke character. On the whole, he’s honestly pretty alright, with some interesting tricks up his sleeve and with some interesting mechanics for a supposed joke character.
