#821 King of Fighters Maximum Impact 2 (PS2) Hidden Characters (3/13): Mr. Karate gameplay.
Gameplay of the hidden character Mr. Karate in SNK’s King of Fighters Maximum Impact 2/King of Fighters 2006.
Mr. Karate returns. Sort of. As you could probably tell, this is actually Mr. Karate II, where Ryo has taken over the mantle. We previously saw him in Buriko One, as well as the PS1 port of Fatal Fury Wild Ambition. In terms of Mr. Karate, well, he’s really no different from previous entries. He has screen-length fireballs, which are nice but nearly always avoided by the CPU, and has the entire of his classic moveset at his disposal. Indeed, there isn’t really much to say about him. He’s just Mr. Karate, but brought into the Maximum Impact sub-universe. As you’d probably expect, he’s pretty competent as his combos even link into his zanrestuken and uppercut special moves, meaning that with decent timing you can absolutely wail on the opponent and beat them down before you know it. The only thing I didn’t really care for about him is that his command moves (such as his f+LP karate chop) actually put him at something of a disadvantage, given how combo-heavy this game is. On the whole however, another competent character, and another good addition to the game.
One noteworthy thing about his costumes is that he actually has a costume variant where Robert has taken up the Mr. Karate mantle. It’s a good one, though not the best costume variant we’ll see from a hidden character.
Next up, the most typical hidden KOF character of them all.
