8K H.265 Video Encoding Speed Test In Resolve on M1 Max MacBook Pro
H.265 Encode Speed Test With DaVinci Resolve on M1 Max MacBook Pro 1080P 4K 8K INSANE RENDER SPEEDS
In this video I'm using DaVinci Resolve 17.4.1 on the new Apple M1 Max MacBook Pro to encode & export ProRes 4444 XQ video files to H.265 video files.
This M1 Max is the 16" version with 32GB RAM, 32 GPU cores and 1TB SSD storage.
There are three Apple ProRes 4444 XQ codec source files that I'm using with three different resolutions. The resolutions are 1080P HD 1920x1080, 4K UHD 3840x2160 and 8K UHD 7680x4320. These video files all have a frame rate of 59.94FPS frames per second.
From here on in I will shorthand the resolutions to 1080P or HD and 4K & 8K and round up the frame rate from 59.94 FPS to 60 FPS for convenience.
The first test is a Resolve project timeline that's 1080P 60FPS with the HD, 4K & 8K ProRes source files in it. I then encode and export each of these Pro Res files form the HD timeline to a H.265 output. This means that Resolve is downscaling the 4K and 8K ProRes files to 1080P HD.
The next test is a Resolve project timeline that's 4K 60FPS with the same HD, 4K & UHD ProRes source files in it. These files also go through an encode export to H.265. Meaning that the 1080P HD file is being upscaled to 4K and the 8K file is being downscaled to 4K.
The third test is a Resolve project timeline that's 8K 60FPS, once again with the ProRes HD, 4K & 8K source files in it. These are once again encoded and exported to H.265, meaning that the 1080P HD video file is upscaled to 8K and the there's a 4K to 8K upscale to H.265 as well.
In total there are 9 individual encode export speed tests in this example with upscaling and downscaling examples and transcoding from one codec to another codec.
Don't forget, this is a codec export speed test and as such the focus is on speed and not quality or file size or other bit rate considerations. I will, however, be doing similar videos to show H.265 export quality tests at various resolutions and bit rates at various frame rates. These videos will also have downloadable H.265 video files linked from the video's description.
Here's another thing to consider. If you are working with 23.976/24FPS, 25FPS or 29.97/30FPS. Your encode times for any of these exports will be at least twice as fast as what you've seen in my results, using the same parameters. So basically,
Here's the chapters for the video, once again using the shorthanded resolutions and frame rates.
