How to setup & edit HDR game capture footage in DaVinci Resolve Studio export HDR H.265 for YouTube
SINCE MAKING THIS VIDEO A NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVE SAID IN THE COMMENTS THAT THE FREE VERSION OF DAVINCI RESOLVE DOES NOT EXPORT H.265, I HAVE NOW UPDATED THE TITLE TO SAY STUDIO.
In this video I'm showing a workflow on how to setup a project in DaVinci Resolve for editing HDR gameplay HDMI captured footage. I then show how to export the DaVinci Resolve timeline and project to a HDR H.265 HEVC MP4 video file for uploading to YouTube.
The game footage was Forza Horizon 5 on the Xbox Series X. The Xbox Series X was set to HDR for its output.
The capture device used was the Elgato 4K60 Pro MK2. This was setup to record HDR over HDMI from the Xbox Series X.
The HDMI gameplay recording was recorded at 4K 60FPS, or to be more precise, 4K UHD 3840x2160 at 59.94FPS frames per second. This matched the output of the Xbox Series X.
This would also be the same process on how to edit PS5 HDR game capture footage when captured with the Elgato 4K60 Pro MK2.
The HDR format we are dealing with here is HDR10 or HDR PQ due to the PQ transfer function with colour primaries of BT.2020 or the more commonly used nomenclature rec. 2020. The bit depth for the recording, editing and export was 10 bit and 1000 nits was used all through the workflow for peak luminance levels.
HDR 10, PQ, PQ 10, PQ format etc. are all commonly interchangeable uses of basically the same thing. HDR without any dynamic metadata such as HDR10+ or Dolby Vision etc. This is also not HLG10 or the HLG format, which is a different format of static HDR.
The Resolve protect was setup to match the frame rate and resolution of the game footage and the color settings were Rec.2020 ST2084 1000 nits. There was no need to enable HDR10+ due to this being HDR10 source footage.
After editing the footage the export file for the YouTube upload master file was basically MP4 using the H.265 codec and set to Main10. This ensures that color space and gamma are copied from the project settings. Other settings such as video bit rate, audio bit rate etc. are selected to taste and preference and to accommodate the project's resolution and frame rate.
My computer is the M1 Max MacBook Pro with 32 GPU cores, 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD storage. This has the added advantage of the H.265 accelerator and also Pro Res accelerators. For this edit the H.265 accelerator in the M1 Max MacBook Pro really helped with the capture file which is 10 Bit 4:2:0 H.265 from the Elgato 4K60 Pro Mk2.
Link mentioned in the video. I will have another couple of comparisons to add soon, just waiting for the HDR files to be encoded by YouTube https://youtu.be/A4MBjz0ILvM
