A playthrough of the exclusive hidden character Ayane in the PS1 port of Team Ninja’s/ Tecmo’s Dead or Alive.

Best Girl™ makes her first appearance in style, by being the exclusive hidden character of this entry. Admittedly, that’s not entirely true. She was technically introduced as the training dummy in the Saturn port of Dead or Alive (here’s Krizalid’s vid showing that, because I’m too lazy to hack that version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC9X5yc_7v0), something which is referenced in this game itself by the fact that Ayane’s 14th costume is the training dummy costume.

Ayane is probably one of the only vaguely interesting characters in the whole of this rather generic series. She’s basically the Iori of the franchise, and serves her purpose very well it must be said. She’s the half-sibling of Kasumi and certain other character we’ll see later on, basically because…well, Kasumi’s mother was raped by Raidou. Yep; in the gynocentric series, they decided to work in a rape subplot. Admittedly, Team Ninja isn’t exactly the sort of company you associate with being classy but, seriously, what the fuck.

Ayane’s a little basic here, but she comes into her own much later in the series. She’s sort of arrogant and bitchy, but that’s mainly to hide her insecurities from what I remember, a little like Asuka in Evangelion. Indeed, she’s probably one of the only characters in the series with any depth, due to certain other tragic elements in the story which I’ll get to in later videos. Here, Ayane more or less just plays like Kasumi from what I can tell. In later games, she has this interesting mechanic where she’ll purposefully face away from the opponent in order to either lure them into attacking, or so she can utilise some unique strikes and combos to counter them. Indeed, she’s like Xiaoyu from Tekken but honestly done much, much better. Here though, she’s still a very competent character, and probably the only character in the series I actually actively like. Except for Hayabusa, I guess. And Hitomi.

This game also adds a new character called Bass, who is the overprotective father of Tina. He was originally going to be in the arcade version of DOA1, but at the time they were mulling over two designs for Tina; one where she was a "killer dancer", and the other where she was a wrestler. They picked the wrestler one (which was the better choice, honestly), but as a result got rid of Bass due to him also being a wrestler. Later though, they decided on him being her dad and reintroduced him. For better or worse.

Also, yeah, no music for some reason on this vid. I tried everything I could find on how to fix it but nothing worked. For a relatively throwaway video like this I don’t particularly care though.

Next up, a strange game.
