Alpine Esports does their races from their own headquarters in France. The drivers have their own simracing studio where they practice and drive the races. Simracing seats are here with Nicolas Longuet (left), Patrik Sipos (middle) and Fabrizio Donoso (right). The simracing studio has an engineering stand where 3 engineers monitor the F1 Esports drivers during practice, qualifying and the races. They keep a close eye on telemetry and call the strategies during the races.
Now how does a typical race week of F1 Esports look like for the Alpine Esports team?
The drivers need to be fit, so they regularly have physical training with the performance coach of Alpine Esports. They do all types of exercises to test their mental and physical capabilities like precision, consistency and speed. You might have seen these tests in the training schedules of real life Formula 1 drivers as well, it’s very similar. As you can see it is very tiring as well, haha!
The drivers debrief their findings with the performance coach after the session and get ready for some practice on the F1 2021 game in the sim racing rigs.
It goes without saying you need to practice a lot to be able to drive in the F1 Esports Series. The drivers practice a varying amount of hours per day, depending on their training schedule. In terms of hours, it comes close to a 9-5 job, sometimes having even longer workdays, especially during F1 Esports race weeks.
The drivers normally start their practice days with a neurological test called neurotracker which you can see in the background right now. This test shows how good the drivers are at focus, precision, consistency and all those things that are important for putting on the perfect lap in F1 Esports.
Now what happens during event days? In the 2021 F1 Esports season, there were 3 races in 2 days within the same event. And there are 4 events in total. So a total of 12 F1 Esports races in the season.
Race days are normally very action packed, where the drivers are still getting the last practice in right before the qualifying session and the race, which is on the same day.
I was fortunate enough to be able to witness the Q1, Q2, and Q3 qualifying sessions of Portimao from within the simracing studio and as you can see, it was very tense. Fabrizio was able to put in a very good lap putting him in P4 with half a tenth to pole position. Nicolas made a crucial mistake on the last corner losing out on pole position by only a couple tenths. It is this close in F1 Esports.
During the race days, the drivers are drinking a special drink to keep their insulin levels balanced so they can perform at their best.
The day after the F1 Esports event, I come in.
As an ambassador of the Alpine Esports team, I create content with the team but one of my other duties is hosting the Alpine Esports show debriefing everything that has happened together with the drivers and staff in a separate production studio. Rounding off the event and looking forward to the next one.
