It can be challenging getting a good quality video signal from older, retro systems. Sure, there are some expensive cables out there that give you an RGB signal output, but some people don’t want to make that sort of investment or commitment. Thankfully, there is now a way to connect your Super Nintendo, Super Famicom, Nintendo 64, and even the Nintendo GameCube to your television or via an upscale with decent quality for under 20-Bucks! I’m talking about the new S-Video Cables from Retro-bit compatible with SNES, N64, and GameCube.

One of the major challenges with the Super Nintendo Jr and the N64 is the fact that Nintendo disabled the ability to get RGB video right from the box with a stock system. This means you can’t take the system from the box, get a set of Component video cables, and connect to your tv to get a good video output. But what you can do is connect the system to your TV or an upscaler via S-video without needing any modifications at all. That’s right, the Super Nintendo, Super Nintendo, N64, and GameCube all support S-video without the need to mod the system at all. While not quite as good of a signal as RGB or component video, it’s very close.

The Retro-Bit cable features the standard Nintendo AV-style connector that each of those referenced systems come equipped with. That’s especially important for the GameCube as for the component cables you need to make sure you have an early release of the system to take advantage of the digital video output port. See, Nintendo removed the Digital AV port from later GameCubes to reduce costs, but that also removed the option to connect the system to a tv using Component video cables. The S-Video cables plug right into these connectors and get you good quality video output.

These cables are equipped with decent thickness insulation on the outside, approximately 4mm on the breakout cable connections and about 7.5mm on the outer insulation itself. This should eliminate any signal loss or pick up other RF noise or interference. These look to be pretty well put together and I am looking forward to testing these in the near future.
