The Most Unique NES Controller? This Thing Is Awesome!
You often remember where you first played a video game and who you played it with. If it was unique to a specific video game system, you may even remember what system you played it on. But what about the controller? Well, I remember in the 4th grade, I changed schools and had to make all new friends. One of those friends was a kid named Kyle, and he had one of the best gaming setups I had ever seen. Like this was the kid who had a Sega Master System; no one else I knew had one of those! Well, it was at his house that I first played The Legend of Zelda, but it wasn't with the normal NES controller. This was with the most unique controller I had seen, an NES Joystick but you held it in your hand, but not like an Atari 2600 controller. I didn't know it then but over 35 years later I have my own 500XJ Epyx by Konix, and it is still awesome!
Sure, the NES has the NES Advantage and the NES MAX, both of which Kyle had, but the Epyx was just different. You held it like an Atari 2600 controller in one hand, while the other activated the A and B buttons. In a lot of ways this was the perfect Left-Handed controller because, unlike the NES game pad, you used your RIGHT HAND to mine your character and your left hand held the controller and hit the buttons. The Epyx also had auto fire, and man, it was beyond awesome!
We played so many games with this at his house, from Gauntlet, Top Gun, and of course, the Legend Of Zelda. Did you ever know this was a thing? Have you ever used the Epyx? They also had similar controllers for the Atari & Commodore 64. Share your memories below!
