The Best Ever? The Nintendo Wii Is Better Than You Remember!
46Over the years, people have had a lot to say about the Nintendo Wii. Some thought it was gimmicky, some thought it was full of shovelware, and others thought it wasn't a serious gaming system. Here's the thing, those people who say those things are all 100% right. But that doesn't mean that it isn't also one of the greatest video game systems of all time. Am I serious? I am, and in fact I think the Nintendo Wii is one of the best systems ever and that it is even better than you remember!
Backward Compatibility:
Out of the gate, there were concerns about the size of the launch library as it was, to be honest, not great. But one smart thing that Nintendo did was make it backward compatible with the Gamecube. As such you had a built-in library of games to tap into right away. Beyond that, the Nintendo Wii also had access to the Virtual Console to download games from the history of Nintendo, Sega, and even the TurboGrafx 16!
Controllers:
I hear you, waggle haters (Adam Koralik, I'm talking to you!), but stay with me for a minute. The Wii remote is amazing for a lot of reasons. First and foremost, it's incredibly versatile! Sure, you can use the Nunchuk from the box, but you also have the Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro that can plug into the bottom of the Wii Remote to give you a more traditional Game Pad for games that support it. Later on you could even use the NES Classic and the Super Nintendo Classic controllers with the Wii! Finally, you could turn the controller sideways to use the Wii Remote like an NES controller!
The Library:
Sure, there's a ton of Shovelware on the system, I won't say there isn't, but there's some amazing titles that are must-play games. Sure, you have Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, but there's more to than just those. Resident Evil 4 on the Wii is the definitive version of that game. We got Donkey Kong Country back on the Wii! And of course we had Wii Sports, Super Mario Bros Wii, and more. Do not sleep on the Wii Library!
