After isolating the pathogen a canadian laboratory was the first to sequence the genes of the virus on April 12th and based on this and other research taking place around the world the WHO officially confirmed a Coronavirus as the cause of SARS on April 16th, 2003.

Knowing what Healthcare workers were dealing with was an important step in containing the disease which was still spreading around the world: the following day India confirmed its first case.

Ultimately SARS 2003 was far less transmissible than first feared and it kind of burned itself out by July 2003. Which was a good thing because the deadly disease did not respond to treatments or vaccines developed at the time.
