Madonna messes with the wrong hacker
At the time the music industry was reportedly losing over $4 billion a year and so Madonna’s team got cute and tried to counter the piracy of her new album by seeding the internet with false MP3 files of her songs.
Though these files appeared to be the same length and size most were blank with a few delivering a brief message from Madonna saying "What the fuck do you think you're doing?"
This pissed someone off and that person hacked Madonna's website and erased all the original content leaving only the following message on the home page:
"This is what the fuck I think I'm doing..."
Below the message download links for each of the album's songs.
There was also an impromptu marriage proposal to Morgan Webb, the host of the daily technology show “The Screen Savers” (within days of the hack she departed the show and moved to Xplay)
As far as I can tell the identity of the hacker remains a mystery but they claimed to have been working with the editors of Phrack, an online hacker magazine…though a Phrack representative would deny any involvement.
Madonna's spokesperson would later state that the defacement was not a marketing ploy.
And I believe them because Madonna would never do anything just to get attention
