Apparently, the most likely reason to all the k-cup shenanigans, is that they had an exclusive contract with a distributor... apparently(x2) that's how Keurig operated in the beginning, distributors selling to local offices and such. The drinks, well obviously because Ii was cutting into the vending machine owners profits... but the food was because they were SNOBS!
