Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War - Operation Katina custom mission test #02
Best viewed at 60 fps.
Another mission mod running on AC5's arcade mode. I wanted to check if the naval units I added to this custom mission worked properly aswell do a "stress" test to see how well the game fares performance-wise when there are many units present in a stage with a heavy atmospheric particle effect load (such as rain/snow/etc).
Inspired by the "Sea of Chaos" mission I placed many naval units as possible and split them in CBGs (carrier battle groups) with some air escorts. One of the most challenging (and not in a fun way) missions I ever created, the original idea was to do a run using the default ammo values (20 x missile/4 x SpW) but due to getting hounded by SAMs and getting shot down so many times I decided to increase these ammo values, nerf some enemy attack variables and add the M/S flags to some units. This coupled with my over-reliance (aswell the high efectivity) of LASMs pretty much trivialized this run and made me feel somewhat discontent with it (and which probably will redo someday.)
As for performance issues, I can't tell very well if the game suffers performance drops due to me having a low-end computer, playing using PCSX2's software rendering mode and using PCSX2's internal recorder to get footage. Everything combined makes the game's performance tank down to around 15-20 fps but judging for the final raw video footage output created by PCSX2 the game seems to run very well most of the time.
As for issues with enemy units, some aircraft would sometimes fly away out of the map and some naval units would snap from their original spawn coordinates to the center of the map. Another issue that can be seen in the video is that some units lack a "solid state", allowing me to fly through them without crashing. The TARGET counter should display the 110 vaue as the max amount of enemies present in the mission but due to the way Katina's HUD was designed and programmed the counter can only go up to 100 (starting from 0 and up to 99). Also another problem present is that when you destroy an entity the game would add one point to your tally, but when you destroy another entity that has other entities attached to it you should get more than 1 point, one for the main entity and multiple for the multiple entities attached to it. For example, in the video I destroyed multiple cruisers/destroyers that had SAMs/AA guns attached to them. Instead of targeting the SAMs/AAs I decided to attack the cruisers/destroyers and sinking them would also destroy their onboard SAMs/AAs. This in theory should give me multiple points but the game will still register as if only the destroyer/cruiser was destroyed. This is not the case if instead I'd chose to destroy their onboard SAMs/AAs, as the game will add one point to my tally for each one of them destroyed. It's quite a bit difficult to explain, but this is the reason my final score is 82/99.
Well, that was quite the wall of text. Like I've stated in the previous video this mod won't be released to the public anytime soon. Also wanted to feature Hyakutaro Tsukumo's work in my vids at least once, as Thunder Force is one of my favorite videogame series.
