Wayyyyyyy before Minecraft existed, Ken Silverman, creator of the Build Engine used in games like Duke Nukem 3D, had created this little thing for testing purposes. I had discovered it on his website not long before Infiniminer and Minecraft hit the scene and had begun using it to test if a game idea I had which was very similar to Minecraft could actually work out. (Then Infiniminer and Minecraft made their debut and I felt somewhat crushed that I was beaten to the punch, though in fairness, my 3D coding experience was still fairly limited at the time.)

Still, this thing pre-dates Minecraft by over a decade and goes to show that the idea of having cubical worlds to explore has been around for a long time so I still might make my game idea someday in the future... maybe... :B

Additional Information and Corrections:

* Here's a link to the Projects page on Ken Silverman's website where you can download Cubes5 from if you're curious: http://www.advsys.net/ken/download.htm

* I used to have a link available to the forum page where I discussed the possibility of cubical levels back in early 2009, however, it's since been lost to time as the forums closed at one point yet were still accessible as an archive, then ultimately disappeared entirely. In the event that it happens to exist archived elsewhere on the net, the forum link was: http://www.jonof.id.au/forum/index.php?topic=1660.0 , but again, this link won't work now.

* Yes, the music in the opening is my own creation. If you don't recognize the music used in my filler videos, chances are it's because I made it myself. You can download much of my music here: http://www.pixelships.com/misc/music.html

* I also made the Cubes5 logo myself (with textures from Cubes5) to make the opening nice and dramatic. There never was an official logo or anything. If you want to see a high-resolution version of the logo, follow this link: http://www.pixelships.com/images/cubes5_logo.png

* There are a lot of special controls in Cubes5 for investigating how certain aspects of the renderer work, such as being able to view the portal boundaries by wireframe or forcing certain mip-mapping levels. These controls are listed in the text file included with the engine.

* When you start Cubes5 you must also supply the filename you wish to work within on the command line, as there is no ability to change the current working file from within Cubes5 itself.

* I got in touch with Ken Silverman about the title "Cubes5" and found out that the 5 in the title is equal to the number of revisions the engine went through. Cubes5 was the fifth revision. Kinda like the M5 computer in the original series Star Trek episode "The Ultimate Computer". (Yes, I've watched too much Star Trek for my own good.)
