Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Lance (NES) Playthrough
Playthrough of FCI's 1991 action-adventure game for the NES, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Lance.
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Lance, released in 1991 for the NES by FCI, is an action-adventure game rooted in the Dragonlance world of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) tabletop RPG. The game takes place during the events of Dragons of Autumn Twilight, the first novel in the Dragonlance Chronicles series by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. It tasks players with guiding the Companions of the Lance, a group of eight iconic heroes, on a perilous quest into the ruined city of Xak Tsaroth. The ultimate goal is to retrieve the Disks of Mishakal, a sacred artifact essential for rekindling faith in the true gods of Krynn.
The gameplay emphasizes real-time combat and exploration within side-scrolling dungeon environments, blending action and RPG mechanics. Players can switch between the eight characters, each with unique abilities. For instance, Raistlin Majere, the frail but powerful mage, can cast spells to devastating effect, while the mighty warrior Caramon excels in close combat. Strategic use of the party's strengths is critical, as enemies such as draconians, spiders, and undead abound. The labyrinthine layout of Xak Tsaroth requires careful navigation, with traps, puzzles, and hidden areas to uncover.
True to its AD&D roots, the game includes some role-playing elements, such as inventory management and character-specific actions, but these are simplified compared to traditional RPGs. The limited lives system adds to the game's challenge; when a character dies, they are permanently gone unless resurrected. The dark, brooding atmosphere is complemented by a haunting musical score, immersing players in the desperate, dangerous mission.
While ambitious in its attempt to bring Dragonlance to a new medium, the game was criticized for its clunky controls, punishing difficulty, and lack of clarity in objectives. Despite its flaws, Heroes of the Lance remains a notable artifact of the early 1990s era of licensed AD&D games, capturing a slice of the beloved Dragonlance universe for fans of the series.
