After Burner Climax, like previous games in the franchise, has a specially designed game cabinet that consists of a servo-equipped chair that bends and rotates with the movements of the on-screen jet. Players will have to utilise their ship's arsenal of missiles and vulcan cannons, as well as exploiting it's overall manoeuvrability. Players can execute barrel rolls and other evasive actions to dodge the unending rain of enemy fire, as reaching the end of the stage within the given time limit is the only requirement to proceed to the next stage. Destroying enemy combat units increases this time, as well as the player's score.
The unique mechanic to this game is the "Climax Mode". When the Climax bar is filled, players are able to slow time and gain a much larger targeting reticule by pushing the throttle to its maximum.
Other new game features include a combo-based scoring system, an indoor stage, a limited branching path progression structure and a pre-game choice of aircraft.
The iconic F-14 Super Tomcat of the previous games has been replaced by a F-14D Super Tomcat with the addition of two new aircraft, F/A-18E Super Hornet and F-15E Strike Eagle.
While choosing their plane, the player can use the throttle to choose between four different paintjobs for each of the three planes. These paint jobs consist of a "Standard" scheme, "Camouflage" scheme, "Special" scheme, and "Low Visibility" scheme.
Additionally, the game includes a Team Play Mode for linked cabinets. In this mode players team up to fight the enemy, with a winner being declared at the end of each round based on the score achieved during the stage.
