During the winter of 2015-2016 I attended a self-directed residency at Artscape Gibraltar Point (AGP) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This animation is one in a series of 'readings' featuring the people and places at AGP at that time. In this case, I am capturing the presence of an 'empty field' - the subject matter is the entire environment at AGP. There are three versions of this animation - each featuring a different section of the same audio recording.

The 'reading' process involves selecting source material - in this case, an audio recording I made just outside of the studio I was working in - and then drawing a triangle mesh which is meant to capture the living essence, living presence of the subject. In this animation you see the drawing of the triangle mesh being played back in the same order that I initially drew the lines. In other animations from this series, featuring some of the people I met at AGP, I found a couple of key images from the video and triangulated them. In this case however, there is no visual for an 'empty field'. So I am essentially triangulating nothing or 'pure energy'. This is one of the early stages of using the triangle mesh/graph as a means for capturing the living presence of a subject. In later work, I have elaborated on this process creating functioning networks, amongst other things.

The lines were drawn in Illustrator, transferred to Autocad and then from there used in a Processing sketch to create the animation.
