I stressed over getting this one right so, with any luck, people watching this will be content with the final product.

Airforce Delta (Deadly Skies) is a combat flight simulator released alongside the Dreamcast's North American launch (09/09/99). For all intents and purposes, this game was a showcase of what Konami could do with Sega's new hardware at the time.

This is, without a doubt, an Ace Combat 2 clone. Airforce Delta even mimicks the mercenary setting that built the background to Namco's seminal flight sim as well as the monetary reward system that encourages efficient take-downs and quicker finishing times for missions as a means of earning money to buy the thirty or so aircraft that are available for purchase throughout play.

Ofcourse, aping on Namco's success does not mean Konami's own game is any less competent as an attempt at replicating air combat. On the contrary, Airforce Delta has slick, snappy and simple controls which can be altered to suit your style of play; the missions in this game also offer alot of challenge which encourages you to be conscious of how you priortise your targets and making the most of the limited time necessary in completing objectives.

I have found if anything lets down Airforce Delta when contrasting it to similar flight combat titles, like even Asmik Ace's Bogey Dead 6, the presentation leads more to be desired. While visually Airforce Delta looks and performs adequately enough on Dreamcast, even without VGA support, its flat menus and average sound design are telltale signs the game was definitely rushed to meet Sega's launch of their new 128-bit system.

Even so, this is a fantastic flight-sim, besides still being one of the few, truly exclusive, Dreamcast experiences. Unfortunately Konami never produced much in the way of software for Dreamcast, with only a handful of titles ever put out during Sega's few years in the sixth generation of video game consoles. With their 2001 output in Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Zone of Enders showing exactly how far they could go during the early Playstation 2 era, it is wonder what this would have meant for Dreamcast had they stuck by Sega instead.
