Alfred Tries To Play: Block Out (Sega Mega Drive)
A better name for this game would be Tetris 3D, because that's what this is. The viewpoint is different- you're looking down the well from the top rather than the front. The shapes are 3D too and can be rotated in all manner of different directions (but there's no pause button because the Start button is used to hard-drop the blocks).
If you're wondering why 3D versions of Tetris never really took off, this game is perfect proof why. It's not so bad at first, but once you're a few layers deep, it's a bit hard to tell what's going on and the game turns more into a frantic guessing game. Rotating the shapes the right way can be slow too- at much higher speeds than those seen in this video, this game is nearly unplayable.
I can appreciate the fact you can customise the playfield to your liking (as I did here), but overall this game is a good example of an idea that sounds good on paper but not so good in practice.
