Alice: Madness Returns Part 53: The End?
So, here we are at the end of yet another game and with it, as per usual, I want to add some personal opinions/impressions of the game which, in case you were wondering, will contain some spoilers so if you are just watching this final video without playing/watching the rest of the game, you have been warned (although I doubt most of this will sound like logical sense; combining my thoughts to a bizarre game is going to end up being unreadable).
So, overall I think the game was rather fun, albeit a little creepy. The combat within the game was decent enough although fighting in large groups can get frustrating and the lock-on system does zoom the camera in a little too close. The enemies had some decent variation that made you play in certain ways to fight them (like the drowned Crewmen who are invincible in their ghost form). The little mini games were very “Hit or Miss” for me like, for example, the rhythm game felt really laggy in most cases except for one. I think the best thing this game has going for it are the different worlds and how vividly obscure they are. Each world has its own flare to it and is either super creepy and unnerving right off the bat or subtly starts to shift in a more disturbing image like the first world. The collectables were cool to scavenge around for to add a bit of flare/explanation for some things or just opening new pathways. The only thing I didn’t like about the levels within Wonderland is that I had no real idea of how my actions within Wonderland were affecting the real world. I think it would’ve been nice if there were occasional flashes of the real world as you traverse Wonderland, maybe you meet a character and there is a small glimpse at their real version or you walk down a certain alleyway and it flickers between reality and Wonderland. Although, that being said, I do understand that her time in Wonderland is more of a psychological trial that she has to overcome and perhaps the characters are just visual representation rather than the actual person which would explain some of my thoughts. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I would’ve liked to see more of the real world because, if this was just an internal struggle we were overcoming, what was she doing in the real world during that time? At one point, we ended up getting into an argument with the Pimp and got arrested even though nothing like that happened within our Wonderland, so like what did we do in the physical world while we were messing about in Wonderland? Regardless of that, let’s just move onto the story; Overall, I thought the story was actually really interesting. The only thing I didn’t like was how blunt the game was about the antagonist; there wasn’t any subtle information about the Doctor being the killer/rapist/slaver/complete asshole, it just kind of appeared in one of our memories and we rolled with it. I understand that this is supposed to be a sort of mystery that we uncover and the reveal that the Doctor was behind it is the big Shocking twist but, you could’ve at least hinted or shown glimpses of his darker side throughout the game. Maybe we end up meeting a survivor/victim of his throughout each world who mutter on about some wicked being with glasses or something (I think he was one of the few, if not the only, characters with glasses but even if he isn’t, you can have some red hearings along the way). Maybe there was something like that within the game and I, being the idiot that I am, just simply missed them which is possible.
Regardless of my complaints, I enjoyed my time with this game and all its obscure, nightmarish characters, enemies and worlds. If you’re looking for something a little creepy, this game is fairly good at making you feel uncomfortable.
