So, as we wind down to the end of yet another game, I will be summarizing my thoughts on the game, which will include some spoilers. For the most part, I really like the core gameplay; I love the feeling like an overpowered god-like Hero, saving the day. The controls feel comfortable, apart from the Shield Ability (having the hold one of the triggers while firing with the other felt real weird, not to mention your movement gets restricted). The powers themselves do look rather cool and get more impressive as the game progress. I do wish they had varied the way we got our powers like maybe have Zeke try to explain a new power, using badly drawn pictures; Having to traverse the sewers and reconnect the conduits gets repetitive after a while, even though it makes some sense to the overall story. One of the problems I had with this game are the side characters (Zeke, our Girlfriend etc.) because they seemingly just appear when the plot needed them to and, since we didn’t spend too much with them, it was hard to figure how I felt about them. Zeke for instance, I’m not sure if he is the good guy or if he’s just a slime bag. I guess he was written like that to allow Cole to either become a villain or Hero; It would’ve been weird if Zeke was a Goody-Two Shoes while Cole is viciously murdering people and destroying half the city. My point is that now that I got a taste how this world and these characters, I wish we could’ve spent more time with them. I wish they showed off the first weeks of the quarantine to show these gangs rising to power, Cole trying to get a grasp of his powers and his friends reactions to all this crazy stuff going on. Another issue is that the side missions get very repetitive because they are either smaller versions of main story quests or copies of each other or they feel very out of place. I can shoot lightning out of my hands like Zeus himself yet, I should take the time out to destroy cameras on a building which will scare harden gang members away? All jokes aside, I just wanted more to take back the territory for the various gangs. Speaking of the gangs, we could talk about them and how I had a somewhat hard time trying to figure out the difference with them. There are three different factions within the game (The Reapers from the first Act, The Dustmen from the Second and the Firsts Sons from Act Three) and each of them have a distinct colour that is associated with them (Reapers were Red, Dustmen were Greenish, the First Sons were Black). They also had Conduits of their own (the Reapers had ones that were super-fast and could zip about the place, the Dustmen could spawn metal bug-like creatures and the First Sons could create massive Aura’s around themselves). Aside from the different enemy types and their colour coded outfits, they didn’t feel too different from one another; Unlike Saints Row 2 that goes in to depth about the various gangs you fight in that game, these gang members have very little, if any, sort of personality to them which makes them feel more like generic. I wonder if they made them that way because we are a Super Hero/Villain and they are just nameless grunts that stand in our way of the respective leaders (Imagine reading a Batman Comic that explain the origins, in depth, of every single grunt the Joker or the Penguin had). Either way, I felt like the general mobs needed a bit more personality to them.
Overall, I did enjoy playing this game and I think it’s a fairly okay frame work for another game, I’m just hoping they go into further detail and give side characters, side missions and the generic enemies more personality.
