Alien Gate Game Sample -- Philips CD-i
Alien Gate is a shooting gallery game developed by SPC Vision in association with Philips Interactive Media Benelux in 1993. There's not much to say about it... but for the sake of amusement, I'll put what's on the game's case:
"This high-speed, multi-level sci-fi shooting gallery is a monster of a game on CD-i! A terrifying evil is threatening the safety of your planet. Hordes of fiendish creatures are advancing through the Alien Gate with a single objective in mind -- the destruction of your world. As the battle begins, the only hope for freedom rests on your sure grasp of the trigger."
Let me get one thing straight: if this game didn't use the precise words of "shooting gallery" and just opted to use the word "shooter", this would be one of the most boring and illogical shooters I have ever played. However, since they DID market it as a shooting gallery-esque game, it just comes off as one of the most boring and illogical gallery shooters I've ever played, which is a lot more acceptable I guess. It's not that the game is unplayable; after all, the graphics are relatively sharp (but what's up with the player ship!?) and the game handles well with the ability to continue using passwords, not to mention the game is so generic and defies conventional shooter wisdom which actually makes it a bit original. However, the game has practically no music and while the game boasts 26 "unique" levels, you'll be doing the same thing over and over to different waves with at least twenty percent of these levels not even requiring you to move from your default position. The gameplay is also relatively simple in its entirety with few power-ups and doesn't get too challenging until about halfway through, making the game appear as a complete snoozefest where most people will quit before the game even attempts to "pick up". Overall, I wouldn't recommend it.
