This Aliens Dark Descent game guide video shows how to use Shelter functionality. Unlocking a Shelter will allow your marines to rest and their stress levels will drop. The game will also create a new autosave and it's useful if some time has passed since the last save.
A Shelter can be created in rooms marked with green house icons on the map. Once you enter that room the game will tell you about the number of doors and you have to weld all of them. It's best to pick rooms with only 1 door so that you need to sacrifice only 1 tool. After the room has been locked press the rest button and confirm the action.
