This Aliens Dark Descent game guide video shows how to unlock an active pause during combat. The game uses slow-motion by default so you still have to be quick when issuing commands. Having an active pause will allow to plan actions without any rush.
Pause the game, enter options, go to the Gameplay tab and set 'On' for 'Pause Game'. The game will now automatically pause each time you've activated Skills Menu.
